1. History of Commercial Aviation

Read the article The Birth of Commercial Aviation (Links to an external site.) from BirthofAviation.org; and Review Chapters15 and 16 of the course text (Lawrence). Submit a two page discussion post to answer the two questions: (1) What impacts did the established Contract Air Mail Routes (CAM) have on today’s commercial airline route structure? (2) What were five economic functions of the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) created by the 1938 Civil Aeronautics Act? Reply to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Do not forget in-text citations, and references. At least one reference/in-text citation should be from the course text

2. National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Contributions

Writing Assignment

Read the fact sheets WWII & NACA: US Aviation Helped Speed Victory (Links to an external site.) from NASA. Write a one-page (not including cover and reference pages) APA-formatted report on structural and aerodynamic research conducted by the NACA.

Save your assignment using a naming convention that includes your first and last name and the activity number (or description). Do not add punctuation or special characters.

3. The Federal Aviation Act of 1958

Case Analysis #1

In 2000, when I was the Airport Manager at Phoenix-Goodyear Airport (owned by the City of Phoenix), located about 25 miles west of downtown Phoenix, we dedicated a brand new terminal building. The aviation department’s art curator thought it a good idea to hang a picture of a TWA Lockheed Constellation flying over the Grand Canyon in a prominent place in the lobby. I emphatically said, “NO,” and proceeded to tell her the story you are about to read.
~Reflections from Shawn Arena, Course Developer

Read Grand Canyon Collision – The greatest commercial air tragedy of its day! (Links to an external site.) from doney.net, which details the circumstances surrounding one of the most prolific aircraft accidents of all time—the June 1956 mid-air collision between two commercial aircraft over the Grand Canyon. Prepare a case analysis addressing the major factors, including the Grand Canyon Collision, surrounding the enactment of the Federal Aviation Act of 1958.

Refer to How to Write a Case Analysis for more details. You MUST read the Sample Case Analysis provided and follow the format.

Save your assignment using a naming convention that includes your first and last name and the activity number (or description). Do not add punctuation or special characters.

Your paper will automatically be evaluated through Turnitin when you submit your assignment in this activity. Turnitin is a service that checks your work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against a database of web pages, student papers, and articles from academic books and publications. Ensure that your work is entirely your own and that you have not plagiarized any material!

4. History of Airline Regulation

Writing Assignment

Read one of the following articles highlighting historical governmental economic regulations in the years preceding deregulation:

Then, review this video that highlights the events that led up to enactment of the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978:

Airline Deregulation: The Document That Transformed The Industry (YouTube/9:53) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Write a two-page (not including cover and reference pages) APA-formatted summary report that answers the question: Was airline deregulation inevitable?

Save your assignment using a naming convention that includes your first and last name and the activity number (or description). Do not add punctuation or special characters.

NACA has played a very significant role in the aviation industry as its contribution forms most of the major achievements of the industry. For instance, it has been labeled as the research midwife to aeronautical industry because of the development of better airplanes. During World War II, NACA engineers were involved in a research that aimed at improving aircrafts in terms of their speed, movability and range (FS-LaRC, 1995). This research changed the outcome of the war significantly as it favored the allies of the war.

Due to the comprehensive research that it had earlier delved into, other research agencies followed NACA’s directions especially on issues such as engine development, drag clean-up, low-drag win, stability, control, deicing, and sea-plane studies. The Bell P-39 AiraCobra was among the first airplanes to successfully undergo over two months of drag cleanup work (FS-LaRC, 1995). It was NACA’s responsibility to test every prototype that involved drag clean-up, which can be defined us the resistance to airflow in an airplane.

Another contribution by the NACA was introducing a deicing mechanism which helped to remove ice that coated around various parts of an airplane. The deicing mechanism involved coming up with a heat system that would melt of the clogged ice. This invention saved the lives of the army who were used to flying in hazardous weather conditions such as ice. Lewis Rodert, one of NACA’s researchers, was awarded for this invention (FS-LaRC, 1995). Other contributions made by NACA’s researchers included coming up with better combustion engines, low-drag wings that made it easier for an airplane to sustain itself through the air, coming up with new measures through flight-testing and surviving water impacts. Therefore, the NACA has played a significant role in the aviation industry by improving the quality of planes. One cannot mention the success of the aviation industry without including NACA.
