NACA has played a very significant role in the aviation industry as its contribution forms most of the major achievements of the industry. For instance, it has been labeled as the research midwife to aeronautical industry because of the development of better airplanes. During World War II, NACA engineers were involved in a research that aimed at improving aircrafts in terms of their speed, movability and range (FS-LaRC, 1995). This research changed the outcome of the war significantly as it favored the allies of the war.

Due to the comprehensive research that it had earlier delved into, other research agencies followed NACA’s directions especially on issues such as engine development, drag clean-up, low-drag win, stability, control, deicing, and sea-plane studies. The Bell P-39 AiraCobra was among the first airplanes to successfully undergo over two months of drag cleanup work (FS-LaRC, 1995). It was NACA’s responsibility to test every prototype that involved drag clean-up, which can be defined us the resistance to airflow in an airplane.

Another contribution by the NACA was introducing a deicing mechanism which helped to remove ice that coated around various parts of an airplane. The deicing mechanism involved coming up with a heat system that would melt of the clogged ice. This invention saved the lives of the army who were used to flying in hazardous weather conditions such as ice. Lewis Rodert, one of NACA’s researchers, was awarded for this invention (FS-LaRC, 1995). Other contributions made by NACA’s researchers included coming up with better combustion engines, low-drag wings that made it easier for an airplane to sustain itself through the air, coming up with new measures through flight-testing and surviving water impacts. Therefore, the NACA has played a significant role in the aviation industry by improving the quality of planes. One cannot mention the success of the aviation industry without including NACA.
