The Great Mosque of Mecca

The masjid al-haram, popularly known as Mecca’s Great Mosque, is Saudi Arabia’s most prominent mosque. It is in the Saudi Arabian province of Makkah, in Mecca, and surrounds the Kaaba. The mosque was given the label haram, which is an Arabic word that means forbidden. As a result, the mosque is regarded as Islam’s holiest sanctuary. The mosque consists of a rectangular center courtyard surrounded by covered prayer spaces where many pilgrimage ceremonies are performed. If Muslims manage to or conduct the minor pilgrimage known as the umrah, they must perform the hajj at least once in their lifetime. Hajji and smaller pilgrimages both include identical rites, such as circumambulating the Kaaba inside the mosque. The station of Abraham and the ka’bah built of gray marble stone are two more significant locations in the courtyard. The mosque has undergone various renovations over the years. It was updated and expanded in the twentieth century—the first half of the century brought dramatic changes by boosting the number of pilgrims to Mecca, allowing its rulers to afford huge construction projects. As a result, the mosque was rebuilt to accommodate a larger number of hajj pilgrims, increasing its maximum capacity to a significant amount. Buildings surrounding the mosque were demolished to make place for expansion, while the mosque itself was outfitted with escalators and pedestrian tunnels to help with hajj congestion. After all of the significant renovations and additions, the mosque has passed through the hands of different caliphs, sultans, and monarchs over the years. The mosque is currently under the control of Saudi Arabia’s king, who is also the guardian of the country’s two holiest mosques. As a result, the magnificent Mecca is regarded as the sacred mosque constructed in Mecca.
