Suicide

Abstract

Suicide and attempted murder are issues of public concern. The recent years, several welcoming studies have been executed to understand suicide as a social problem. The process has realized good progress in interacting with individuals who have ever attempted suicide or thought about it. Despite the advancement, though, the issue proceeds to haunt society. It is a major health problem issue among young adults, especially in their youthful stages. Surprisingly, the ordeal impacts young children who are yet to experience the real challenges in life. Even though the occurrences are rare with the condition having been stabilized in the recent decade, suicide is the second cause of death among the individuals aged between 15-24 years (Bilsen, 2018). In some way, the ordeal can be viewed as a disease-free endeavor that fails to record any instance of physical disorders. Although studies in predictive factors massed reasonable progress, inherent aspect in the endeavor makes it more difficult to counter and eliminate the issue within the society. Therefore the study will evaluate the risk factors, treatment of disorders relating and antecedent to suicide, including mental illness, family violence, drug and substance abuse and individual behaviors. Further, the research will address the complex ability to cope with the aftermath of the suicide ordeal procured by the future of research relating to suicide.

Introduction

Suicide rates in America increased drastically from 1999 to 2018. The report noted that the numbers were the highest in the current century, including the death of several celebrities, with Anthony Bourdon being one of them (Bilsen, 2018). The discourse and the spotlight of the matter brought it to be a national and international discourse community with unraveling efforts to counter it. Suicide can be prevented and even avoided if the right procedures are followed. However, most of the victims fail to speak up, resulting in silent suffering and, eventually, death. Therefore family and friends should consider the fight as personal since paying attention to a suicide case in the last moments can save their lives and reverse their corrupted minds for the better. Ideally, individuals are conversant that their lives on earth are limited, but nobody wishes to end their lives abruptly. It is critical to identify reasonable factors in the issue, which can lead to the identification of the causative agents and possible solace to the issues. Evaluation of the national report indicates that 100 individuals struggle with suicide in a cohort of 1000,000 population (Bilsen, 2018). The values project the well-being of the society, and thus, it will be functional to react before it is too late to save valuable souls. Traditionally, male suicides have outnumbered those of the female counterparts in all countries with South Korea and developing countries taking the lead. Notably, cases of suicide are high among individuals who previously struggled with mental disorders. Therefore, venturing into the issue using the scholarly gear will facilitate opening up the society on the menace’s reality as it appears. An issue cannot be countered without a collective effort, especially if it is an issue of social discourse (Bilsen, 2018). It is heartening to loose individuals abruptly through suicide who could have otherwise participated in developing the community economically, socially or even spiritually. Therefore it will be essential to address risk factors, treatment of antecedent disorders, the suicide aftermath, the role of psychologists and the future of the research related to suicide issues.

Risk Factors

Suicide is multidimensional, translating that multiple factors can contribute towards the existence of the ultimate ordeal. However, identifying some of the possible exposure environments and behaviors can help structure the framework for the menace’s treatment. One of the major risk factors is a lack of social connection when one is cited as a burden to others. Isolation can ruin an individual since a human being was created and structured to be social. Interacting and associating with other functions to offer self-appreciation and cement room for one to develop an individualized identity. Thus, when one fails to realize the sole purpose of interacting with others, they tend to feel unwanted and thus forge ways to eliminate themselves from their site. When one fails to have a pre-existing medical condition, taking away their lives appears to be the only option that ends up being counted as one of the static in the suicide data (Bilsen, 2018). Unfortunately, social interaction can be more difficult for individuals in retirement or even senior citizens. Notably, the society has existing options with interactive places available where individuals can secure new friends. Thus the aging population should be settled in such home care programs, which will help reduce isolation as the risk factors.

Cultural and religious beliefs can be conflicting when the doctrine goes against societal norms. Some religious institutions believe that suicide is noble, and taking away one’s life pleases the gods. As a society, it is vital to identify such religious practices within the society and forge ways to establish a dialogue on the issue (Bilsen, 2018). Therefore universal morality should be made available to partisans across the globe to weigh the credibility of the religious teachings on issues relating to life and death.

Epidiomolgical studies have proven that suicide can run in the family history. The case is challenging ordeal since dealing with genetic menace can be contradicting to individuals across other fields. For example, when one twin commits suicide, the remaining party is exposed to more suicidal thoughts, which can be minimized through psychological therapies (Bilsen, 2018). Aggregation of the mortal issue can be minimized when the families are identified and kept under close monitoring. Ideally, the mental issue can be reversed, and the insertion of optimistic behaviors cannot be any challenges once the risk factors are sorted out.

Antecedent Disorders

Depression is cited as an ailment on a biological basis. Struggling with suicide as government officials at local or national levels can be hard, but dealing with connected disorders can offer leeway towards controlling the menace. In comparison, depression fails to have unique biological components. Psychological and social factors function accordingly. Losing a close friend, relative, or even renowned societal members can result in depression (Levi-Belz, Gvion & Apter, 2019). For complex reasons, the majority of individuals find themselves encroached in negative thinking since, to them, life has attained a rock bottom. However, there are various treatments available which can normally suffice in the long run. Family and friends can be critical contributors in controlling mild cases of depression in an individual. When the ordeal elongates to higher stages, professional psychiatrists, psychologists, religious counselors can be invited to assume control over the situation (Levi-Belz, Gvion & Apter, 2019). Notably, each professional has bonified expertise which can assist the victim in various ways. Several depressed victims can be advised to utilize antidepressants from the physicians’ advice. Suicidal thoughts sets in when emotional pain becomes uncontrollable to a majority of the patients, and losing sight of the fact appears to render them a permanent solution. On most occasions, individuals who survive after trying to kill themselves attest that they were lucky that they never died. Notably, treating depression can suffice in solving the suicidal ideologies since nobody wishes to propagate their individualized death. Therefore, it is vital to assess the warning signs from a depr4essed individual for the partisan to act on time (Levi-Belz, Gvion & Apter, 2019). For example, close associates can monitor the drastic change of behaviors and untidy and give away some important items accrued to the client. A depressed individual can be assisted by listening and emphasizing with their situation. Thus exercising seriousness in countering depression can eliminate the suicidal stage in the long run.

Drug and substance abuse is another antecedent disorder that eventually leads to a suicidal mentality. Drug addicts tend to attach their daily activities and progress in life with drugs. Thus an individual develops a systematic approach in which they cannot execute any ordeal without servicing their mind and body with substances. If one fails to secure the expected drugs, they ideally succumb to desperation and mental ailments associated with other factors in life. In particular, drug addicts tend to be money oriented which leads them to criminal and immoral activities in the society (Levi-Belz, Gvion & Apter, 2019). On various occasions, one can choose to terminate their lives once the emotional struggles overcome the drug and substance stimulation. Therefore agencies to facilitate rehabilitation and reviving individuals burdened by drug abuse can facilitate in reducing suicide levels in the society (Levi-Belz, Gvion & Apter, 2019). Older individuals in the society may be more affected than the younger generation, thus citing where concern should be directed. Violent behaviors towards other individuals in society can be a potential risk factor for anyone struggling with drug addiction. Therefore the men should be eradicated in the community for the nation to realize fewer suicide cases meaning from drug and substance abuse.

Suicide, family violence and intimate battles are some of the major issues facing public health around the globe. Therefore to address suicide and terminate its presence in society, related issues must be coded and dealt with. Compassion and affection are vital stages in an individual’s life, and they develop serious mental issues when the courtship is terminated intentionally and emotionally (Levi-Belz, Gvion & Apter, 2019). Once a partner is subjected to violence from an individual, the value is it, lover, parent or guardian lack of meaning in life settles in. For example, when children are subjected to continuous mental and physical torture, suicide becomes the ultimate solution. In some way, taking away one’s life appears as revenge and sign of the level of discontentment faced by the victim. Therefore the concerned parties should identify with the issues as an approach to limit suicide cases (Levi-Belz, Gvion & Apter, 2019). Notably, marriage counselors can purposely secure a door to door endeavor in a community struggling with domestic violence. If the cases can be reduced drastically, then it will be rare to cite any suicidal cases in society. The psychological approach in solving domestic conflict can be the most suitable mechanism.

Suicide Aftermath

Losing a loved one is not a pleasing experience, whether it settles in without warning or even a long struggle with known illness. Suicide, in particular, makes the bereavement process more challenging as compared to other terminal illnesses. As such, the survivors must deal with the police in reporting and assessing the cause of death (O’Connor & Nock, 2016). It should be noted that legal interrogation is not meant to attain the solace to other social problems, but victims are set to legalize their disconnection to the aftermath. Additionally, the victims of previous suicide attempts or even the family and close friends of the deceased are forced to deal with the stigma attached to the ordeal. Survivors may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which may drive them to mental illness (O’Connor & Nock, 2016). Anxiety chronic disorder can be more impactful if not treated; thus, psychologist and other concerned parties should be conversant with such architecture to facilitate a smooth transition to survivors and indirect victims. After any instance of homicide, survivors can divert the anger to the perpetrators, which can, in return, impact the community on various occasions. For example, society might suffer double tragedy by losing either parties or even more (O’Connor & Nock, 2016). Therefore, relevant authorities should take note of such occurrences to assist the partisans in overcoming the menace. Suicide can shatter objects and activities taken for granted on earth. Thus, if the stakeholders and shareholders in the psychological department can evaluate the ideologies, then national stigma and other side effects can be reduced following interaction with a suicide victim.

Role of Psychologist

Psychologists are the drivers towards suicide free communities around the globe. They are among the trusted sources in dealing with social issues. Therefore, they can choose to revert the approach utilized in reporting by drafting a more thoughtful message, which will reduce stigma and increase awareness and understanding. The professional should invest in entities that will encourage the affected individuals in seeking help. As such, the efforts should be set to assist individuals struggling with antecedent disorders that contribute to suicide. Further, experts in psychology should invest more in therapy groups across the globe (O’Connor & Nock, 2016). The approach should not be made as a treatment option but a mandatory routine that should be spread across educational and medical facilities in the world. Generally, the scholars in the field should own the social problem and incorporate technology with innovative ideologies that will help identify patients struggling with suicide or depression issues.

Future of suicide Research

The forthcoming endeavors cannot be countered if the scholarly sector will fail to employ suitable research topics in the future. Therefore, other researchers should consider evaluating the availability of modern technology to project suicidal behaviors among the victims (O’Connor & Portzky, 2018). Additionally, testing and evaluation of theoretical models in suicidal issues should be considered a suitable research topic. In the long run, national and worldwide victory will be achieved following combined efforts of existing and future research articles. Any study provides insightful techniques on how to deal and identify with suicidal thoughts, behaviors and treatment options (O’Connor & Portzky, 2018). Further, approaches to expand prevention techniques among the economic groups will suffice the scholarly department. Importantly, the studies will need to identify and synthesize new challenges which will compromise new interventions and discoveries.

Conclusion

Suicide is preventable, and thus the world joins hands in eliminating the menace. Currently, the menace is among the top ten causes of death globally, yet psychological intervention procedures are in place. Nevertheless, failing to attain the set target does not limit progress in the future, which might be more promising than the existing ordeal. Performing repulsive and violent activities to oneself is inhumane, which originates from value degrade originating from social influence. Overall addressing the risk factors and antecedent disorders leading to suicide might open up the community on possible approaches that might eliminate the endeavor. Thus, investing in the future as a psychologist will guarantee victory in the long run.
