Describe in general the issue being debated

The issue being discussed in this paper is whether secession is justifiable or not. Secession is defined as the withdrawal of a specific group of people from a larger group (Catala, 2013). It can be from an organization, a political group, a military alliance or a union that has a goal to achieve after that. The focus on this paper will be on the arguments for and against withdrawal of a particular group from a larger group. Is it justifiable to secede or is it not?

What is the Main Argument in each perspective? On what points do they agree or disagree

The main argument was between the south and the north disagreeing on matters secession. The south wanted to withdraw from the federal union citing the frequent violation of the US constitution by the federal government while the north, supported the reelection of Abraham Lincoln who was against secession. The main arguments between the south and north disagreeing are discussed below;

The state of South Carolina argued that there were frequent violations of the US Constitution and this was by the federal government left them with no choice but to withdraw from the Federal Union (Dew, 2017). The state gave reasons as to why it had come to that decision of secession. She wanted the right of self-government. That had been brought about earlier on when the British government had taken the mandate of creating laws for thirteen US states. It led to a fight for self-governance that made them free and independent states. That each time a government destroys the statutes on which it was formed, the people had no choice but to abolish it and come up with its new form. Secondly, with the creation of the constitution of the US in 1787, South Carolina took heed and amended some parts of her constitution to follow the demands she had assumed. There was the Declaration of Independence under which there was the law of compact. The state of South Carolina also argued that the government had violated the rights given to slaves and that the North has decided to vote in a president whose rules and way of service denied them the access of slaves as personal property. She later declared that the states were holding slaves be denied self-governance and become enemies with the federal government. The states argued the North was hesitant to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act meaning that the compact was no longer fitting.

The North, on the other hand, supported the election of President Abraham Lincoln a leader who proposed most of their interests. In his speech, Lincoln said that secession was not justified as wanted by the South. He argued that he was not going to abolish slavery and that there was no way it would come to an end as suspected by the people of the South. Lincoln further argued that the union form which the south was seceding was long-lasting. He said that the union was formed earlier than the constitution, therefore, no state is entitled to leave it. Lincoln argued that secession is anarchy and those who go ahead to do it was proving rebellion from the union. When states decide to secede more states would join in, and the country would head to chaos (Catala, 2013).

What types of evidence do the authors use and does that evidence support their thesis?

Given what the southern states had to defend their argument for, there were several issues as to why they wanted a secession. They argued saying that in 1765 the British Empire formed laws that gave the thirteen states the right to be free and independent therefore even when they secede they are protected by that law (Catala, 2013). They also argued that the 4th article of the constitution of the United States provided for the Fugitive Slave gave them the go-ahead to continue having slaves. The people of South Carolina claimed that in some states like Illinois and New York the fugitive was discharged from alleged labor and not a single one of them had the government agreed with the constitution. On the issue of antislavery agitation, they said that the North had condemned slavery terming it as sinful, encouraged slaves to leave the southerners’ homes and taught some to revolt. This evidence by the south supported their thesis of wanting to secede from the North.Secession Questions Response

Abraham Lincoln, on the other hand, said that secession was a form of anarchy. He noted that secession’s central idea was rebellion.  Lincoln also said that Americans are one and therefore cannot separate from each other. He further argued that he was not going to abolish slavery basing his argument on the part of the constitution that provided each state to manage its domestic entities without interference from the other. He said that the Union was long lasting and that this perpetuity was formed by the Articles of Association in 1774 and further continued by the Declaration of Independence in 1776 (Dew, 2017). His argument supported their thesis of not seceding in the sense that Lincoln came up with arguments for discouraging secession.

How did your reading change the way you understood the subject

The articles provided on secession have helped me understand the concept of secession.  I realized the effects that this act could bring to a nation especially when it is facing a political crisis.Secession Questions Response

How are the issues presented in your readings still relevant to you today?  Please explain how your background and life experiences might influence your perspective on the topic

Some of the issues mentioned above are still relevant because there are cases of secession being experienced in some parts of the world, for instance, the question of Scotland wanting to break from the United Kingdom, Catalonia from Spain among others that happen in organizations. Personally, I have not experienced secession in my journey of life.Secession Questions Response

Imagine you have been asked to tackle a current national or global issue, how would you use what you have learned to help you do so?

After reading about secession from the articles, I would apply the art of Abraham Lincoln of sticking to what the constitution says. I will not argue against the people’s will if it does not get covered under the set rules governing our organization. Finally, I would let known to the people the effects of what they are undertaking.Secession Questions Responses
