A robot is a machine that operates on computer programs to carry out a series of complex tasks and actions. Robots are some of the fantastic products of technological advancements. They have been developed primarily to enhance operations in the workplace environment, particularly those beyond human capabilities. However, most firms have extended the use of robots to tasks within human capabilities. Such moves have raised fear over the potential of robots in replacing human effort at workplaces. Even though robots have continuedto impact workplaces positively, there are numerous reasons to believe that they may never succeed in replacing humans in workplaces.

Reasons for Using Robots

Robots perform numerous essential tasks at workplaces. Typically, robots are installed at workplaces to perform tasks that are beyond human capabilities. Mainly, robots perform functions that are either too laborious or risky for humans to carry out. For example, robots are commonly used in bomb detonation, handling explosives, or dangerous chemicals. Additionally, robots are vital machines at workplaces because of their ability to deliver high-quality results. Some jobs might require high precision and repeatability that is not easily attainable by direct human effort, for instance, the manufacture of high accuracy metrology equipment. Thus robots are often required to perform such a task. Robots are also essential in workplaces since they improve the conducivenessof the work environment. Robot partner with humans to performtasks more efficiently than when humans were to perform them without involving robots. It is also important to note that robots enhance flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the work environment (Andre, Paul, & Margaret, 2017).

Disadvantages of Robots at the Workplace

Despite their usefulness, robots have several limitations that render them objectionable machines in workplaces. First, robots compete intensely with humans for job opportunities. Most manufacturing firms prefer robots to humans because robots canperform tasks at tremendous speeds and exceptional accuracies. Consequently, robots have continued to replace humans in workplaces, leading to unemployment. According to Brougham and Haar (2018), one robotic machine can perform numerous tasks simultaneously hence can replace several workers. Robots have very high capabilities but have a significant limitation. They have a very poor response to uncertainties. Robots follow instructions and never deviate from programs even if there is an emergency in the work environment. As opposed to humans, robots lack cognitive abilities and cannot reason for themselves. Thus, they will always continue executing tasks regardless of changes in the work environment. Robots also pose significant threats to human safety in a work environment. Robots are dangerous machines when they are subjected to erroneous programs or unfavorable work conditions(Salzmann-Erikson, & Eriksson, 2016).

Reasons That Humans are Still Better Than Robots

Robots are amazing machines with excellent capabilities,but they are yet to match human skills. As one of their major limitations, robots are pre-programmed machines that follow strict instructions limiting their flexibility to changes in the work environment. Some robots have sensors and can respond to changes in work conditions. However, their senses are only limited to certain stimuli. Robotic responses are non-exhaustive but instead limited to just a few changes in work conditions. On the contrary, humans are cognitive being that can adequately reason out changes in a work environment and respond appropriately. For example, just a few robots with fire sensors would respond in a case of fire outbreaks while humans will readily vacate the place and initiate anti-fire mechanisms. Moreover, humans will continue to outperform robots in workplaces because it is easier to train a human being to perform a task than to program a robot. Ideally, programming a robot requires personal training. A programmer must undertake some trainingto be able to program a robot. It cheaper and takes less time to train humans on changes in a workplace than to program a robot on the same changes (Vysocky& Novak, 2016). 

Conclusion

Application of robots in workplaces has caused a dilemma over their potential in replacing humans at work.  However, it is evident that robots have several inefficiencies that limit their ability to replace humans in workplaces. Robots will continue to supplement human effort and perform that are beyond human capabilities but will never succeed to outdo human due to the relatively greater cognitive abilities in human beings.
