Preventive health screenings for older adult population based on age and sex.

As population ages, preventive health care screenings and recommendationsbecome more complex. The leading causes of death in the adult population include heart diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, among others (Bibbins-Domingo et al., 2016). Poor diet, physical inactivity, and tobacco use are some of the actual aspects of death cause in the older adult population.

Cognitive health, mental health, and substance use is an example of preventive health screening for adults above the age of 65 years. The screening checks for tobacco use, signs of cognitive impairment, depression, and tobacco use. Regular screening for high cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and nutrition screening is recommended for the older adult population. The older adult population is asked to eliminate trans-fatty acids that are produced industrially. The advice results in aversion of at least six to nineteen percent coronary heart diseases that are known for killing many older adults (Bibbins-Domingo et al., 2016). Old adult women are advised to go for breast and cervical cancer while men are advised to do prostate cancer.

According to statistics, approximately twenty percent of adults above the age of sixty-five are obese (“Older Adults | Healthy People 2020,” n.d.). Adults above the age of 65 experience a higher risk of chronic disease. Sixty percent of older adults in the United States manage two or more chronic diseases.

Older adult immunization recommendations

Older adults are recommended to get a yearly seasonal flu vaccine. The vaccine is most important for older adults with chronic health conditions. Older adults who did not receive the Tdap vaccine during adolescent are advised to get it to protect themselves from whooping cough. Pneumococcal vaccines are recommended for adults over 65 years to protect them from infections in the bloodstream and lungs (“Recommended Vaccines for Adults | CDC,” 2019). Adults over the age of 65 years should also get Shingles vaccine to protect them from shingle disease and the complications that come with the disease.
