SCENARIO

For this assessment, you may choose from the following options as the context for the quality or safety issue or chosen diagnosis for researching and completing this assessment:

  • The specific diagnosis you identified in your previous assessment.
  • The simulation Vila Health: Determining the Credibility of Evidence.
  • A personal practice experience in which a sentinel event occurred.

INSTRUCTIONS

The purpose of this analysis is to better understand what constitutes credibility of journal articles as well as websites. The role of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse in incorporating evidence-based research continues to growth in clinical practice. As quality improvement (QI) measures to reduce safety risks continue to be emphasized, the need for evidence-based models and evidence-based templates is growing. This type of systematic approach to incorporating evidence-based findings allows nurses to make clinical and operational decisions based upon the best available evidence. When the most up-to-date evidence-based findings are utilized, patient-centered care improves outcomes and enhances the patient experience.

For this assessment:

  • Explain the criteria that should be used when determining the credibility of journal articles as well as websites.
  • Support your explanations with references to the literature or research articles that describe criteria that should be used to determine credibility.
    • Your identification and determination of credibility should be done within the context of your chosen scenario for this assessment. For example, if you choose to use the provided Vila Health scenario, your initial identification of resources should be of resources that will best help address the presented issue. However, if you are locating resources to help provide evidence-based care for the diagnosis you identified in the first assessment, you may want to begin your literature and evidence search from the databases that identified. Any of the three scenario options are acceptable. So, pick the one that most interests you.

Be sure to address the following in this assessment, which correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Please study the scoring guide carefully so that you will know what is needed for a distinguished score.

  • Describe a quality or safety issue, or a chosen diagnosis, that could benefit from an evidence-based approach.
  • Explain criteria that should be considered when determining credibility of resources such as journal articles and websites.
  • Analyze the credibility and relevance of evidence and resources within the context of a quality or safety issue, or a chosen diagnosis.
    • This is where you are selecting the specific resources to help address the issue in your chosen scenario.
  • Explain the importance of incorporating credible evidence into an EBP model used to address a quality or safety issue, or a chosen diagnosis.
  • Communicate using writing that is clear, logical, and professional with correct grammar and spelling using current APA style
  • By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:
    • Competency 2: Analyze the relevance and potential effectiveness of evidence when making a decision.
      • Explain criteria that should be considered when determining credibility of resources such as journal articles and websites.
      • Analyze the credibility and relevance of evidence and resources within the context of a quality or safety issue, or a chosen diagnosis.
    • Competency 3: Apply an evidence-based practice model to address a practice issue.
      • Explain the importance of incorporating credible evidence into an evidence-based practice model used to address a quality or safety issue, or a chosen diagnosis.
    • Competency 4: Plan care based on the best available evidence.
      • Describe a quality or safety issue, or a chosen diagnosis, that could benefit from an evidence-based approach.
    • Competency 5: Apply professional, scholarly communication strategies to lead practice changes based on evidence.
      • Organize content so ideas flow logically with smooth transitions; contains few errors in grammar/punctuation, word choice, and spelling.
      • Apply APA formatting to in-text citations and references exhibiting nearly flawless adherence to APA format.

There are several factors one should consider while evaluating the credibility of a source.  However, the CRAAP test outlines the factors one should consider in evaluating how credible a source is. The CRAAP test takes into consideration the time of literature was written (“4. Evaluating sources with the craap test,” 2021). The literature used should be as current as possible to ensure the quality of the research results. The second factor in consideration is the relevancy of the journal article or website. A researcher should ensure the literature chosen is relevant to the questions they are trying to answer.  The third factor to consider is the authority of the authors of the article. However, most articles published in established journals are from authoritative authors as they have been peer-reviewed. The fourth factor to consider is the accuracy of the articles. To assess the accuracy of a research article or a website, one can check the reference in the article. Accurate research articles often incorporate references of their research, thus presenting evidence of their sources.  Nurses can use the CRAAP test to test the credibility of articles while researching the best practices in the care of a dyspnea patient.

Researching evidence-based practices can be useful in the care of a dyspnea patient. Dyspnea often signals underlying conditions such as asthma, pneumonia, heart failure.  Therefore, an analysis of articles providing literature on evidence-based practices can assist a nurse in determining the right form of care to provide for the patient. To identify a credible article, the nurse should use trusted databases such as PubMed to identify articles that can provide relevant information. An example of an article discussing evidence-based practices for the care of dyspnea patients is;” Routine dyspnea assessment and documentation by Kathy baker.” (Baker, DeSanto-Madeya, & Banzett, 2017). The article fulfills the conditions for credible research. Bakers article was published in 2017 and thus qualifies as a recent article within a five-year range.  The article is also relevant to the care for dyspnea as it discusses the routines in care for a dyspnea patient. In addition, the article is peer-reviewed; thus, it has accurate information from authoritative authors.  The article also meets the purpose of providing the nurse with evidence-based practices for caring for a dyspnea patient.

They are incorporating credible research in an evidence-based practice s critical for various reasons. One of the reasons is that incorporating credible research enables the nurse to provide quality and effective care for the patient (Garcia, Daugherty, Ben Khallouq, & Maugans, 2018).  The provision of effective care ensures the patient receives the best care promptly. The use of credible research also enables the nurse to manage dyspnea effectively, thus assisting in uncovering underlying conditions and completely resolving the condition in case there is no underlying issue present.  The use of credible research in evidence-based practice also enables the nurse to provide individualized care (University of Canberra, 2021). The patient, therefore, receives care specifically suited to their condition, allowing them to recover much faster. The use of credible literature in evidence-based practice also enables the nurses to integrate the latest research on the condition into the care they provide for the patient. The patient, therefore, gets the most recent credible forms of care, enabling them to recover faster.

In conclusion use of credible research in evidence-based practice is essential as it enables the nurse to provide effective and quality care. There are several ways nurses can assess the credibility of a website or journal they are using to research. However, the CRAAP test is effective in identifying the level of credibility of a source. The CRAAP test incorporates aspects in which the research is recent, accurate, relevant,  and from an authoritative source, thus increasing its credibility. It is also important for nurses to use credible research in evidence-based practice to improve the quality of care and effectiveness of the care.
