Infertility in Males Related to Mitochondrial Respiratory Defects

Background information

Male infertility is the situation where men are unable to make a fertile woman pregnant. Male infertility is caused mainly by deficiencies in their semen and its quality. In recent year, male infertility has become a point of concern because of the evidence of reduction of the male semen quality of most healthy young men globally. The infertility is a common issue affecting approximately seven percent of all men. The ability to be able to make a woman pregnant is the manhood and pride of every man. Therefore, the inability to do so affects men physically and emotionally in performing their day to day activities. Male infertility is related to many factors such as genetics, immune infertility, y chromosomes defects and mitochondrial respiratory defects. Depending on the cause of the male infertility, each has different form of treatment and prevention. Some cases such as the male DNA damage which leads to infertility can be treated if recognized at early stages. Most men are affected by the infertility problem caused by mitochondrial respiratory failure.

Since the mitochondrial gene mutates just like any other gene in the human body, the mitochondrial respiratory failures may result to male infertility. In the recent research it is clear that for an effective sperm to be produced by a man, a normal mitochondrial respiration is needed. The process in which healthy and effective sperms are produced in male body requires enough oxygen to facilitate the mitochondrial respiratory process. Lack of enough oxygen in the body leads to abnormal mitochondrial respiration which results to male infertility due to accumulating mutant mitochondrial DNAs in the male body. The number of cases in relation to the male infertility have increased from year to year raising interest to researchers to carry out for research. The human body is a very complicated phenomena with lots of components and activities that are difficult to understand without the required knowledge. Despite the fact that male infertility contributes to most cases of childlessness in most families, it has been neglected for many years and the burden put on women. On the other hand, male infertility has is now greatly developing in the medical science sector raising more concern and research for better solutions to it.

Introduction

In this section, a summary on what the research study consists of is made. Male infertility is the main theme in the research with much concerns on the mitochondrial respiratory defects as a factor causing male infertility. Due to the increasing concerns and questions on male infertility, this study is carried out to answer some of such questions and analyze the situation. The research study covers the importance of male infertility analysis. The research on male infertility provides an in depth understanding of the role of oxygen in the respiratory process and the effects it causes to the body if the oxygen is not enough. A clear understanding of how mitochondrial respiratory defects lead to male infertility is met. The human body is a very complicated phenomena with lots of components and activities that are difficult to understand without the required knowledge. Despite the fact that male infertility contributes to most cases of childlessness in most families, it has been neglected for many years and the burden put on women. On the other hand, male infertility has is now greatly developing in the medical science sector raising more concern and research for better solutions to it. The study answers question on how mitochondrial respiratory failures may result to male infertility. The connection between oxygen deficiencies and male infertility is shown too.

By using different forms of research study designs and methods new knowledge on better understanding of the male infertility are achieved. With the help of the science department in the school the research was a success. With the increasing cases and questions on the male infertility, it is important to carry out this research. Answers on how to treat and prevent the increasing cases of childlessness due to male infertility are found from this research. Mitochondrial defects as a result of mutations of the DNA is the main cause of male infertility and the main point of view in the research study. With the appropriate materials and research methodologies, a better understanding on mitochondrial defects as a male infertility factor is found. The research includes the background information on the topic, analysis, findings, evaluation and assessment of how mitochondrial failures result to male infertility. The research presents different form of methodologies and research designs to explain how mitochondrial mutation defects can result to male infertility.

Material and methods

On this section of the research proposal, the materials needed in carrying out the research are mentioned. All the material and methodologies for the research study are stated here. How data is collected presented and analyzed.

Sources of data

The main source of data on the mitochondrial defects as a cause of male infertility is the online portal from science journals and books. The international scientific index journal provides researchers with important information on scientific matters. Questionnaires were administered to male specialists to answer most of the questions relating to the topic of study. The answered questionnaires were more reliable since specialists like doctors with male infertility knowledge provided solid answers.  In this research, so as to get the right information interviews with the victims of male infertility was conducted so as to get the sample to represent the percentage of men affected by the later. Scientific experimentation was one of the most important sources of data for research on infertility of males in relation to mitochondrial respiratory defects. Experiments were conducted to determine the number of men out of the chosen samples were infertile and if it was caused by mitochondrial respiratory defect.

Research design

The main research design used in this study was the experimental research design. This is where a direct   experiment is done to show the relationship between two variables. A scientific lab experiment to determine the effect of mitochondrial defects to the process of producing healthy sperms in the male body. In the recent research it is clear that for an effective sperm to be produced by a man, a normal mitochondrial respiration is needed. The process in which healthy and effective sperms are produced in male body requires enough oxygen to facilitate the mitochondrial respiratory process. Lack of enough oxygen in the body leads to abnormal mitochondrial respiration which results to male infertility due to accumulating mutant mitochondrial DNAs in the male body. For clear evidence that mitochondrial respiratory defects cause male infertility then an experiment was very important for more reliable results.

Descriptive research design was also used in this research study. In order to be able to relate the variables it is important to use a descriptive form of data. The situation in which a mitochondrial respiratory defect due to problems such as lack of oxygen can be well understood through description method of research design. This method is basically theory based where old research is used to compare and analyze data for reliable results. Descriptive form of research design provides an in-depth insight into the relation between one variable and another. Descriptive research design is cheap since it does not require a lot of involvement but the use of secondary source of data to come up with final findings and results.
