If children learn their first language by mimicking what they hear, the issue becomes more difficult when it comes to learning the second language since the first language already has a set of answers. The process of teaching a second language was all about instilling new habits in reaction to stimuli in a familiar situation (Byers-Heinlein, & Lew-Williams, 2013). If the structures of the native language and the target language were comparable, it was thought that the first language might aid learning (Hoff, 2013). Learning the new target language would be challenging if the two languages’ structures were different. It was proposed that a teacher should ensure that pupils were establishing a new habit by repeatedly imitating and repeating the same target language patterns. Furthermore, a teacher was expected to concentrate on teaching structures that were thought to be difficult, such as those that differed between the target and native languages. Linguists who employed the Contrastive Analysis method focused on comparing languages, identifying distinctions, and offering indications for effective teaching.
Individual variation in second-language acquisition is defined as the study of second language learning fast by some people as compared to other people. Adults who study a second language seldom achieve the same level of skill as native speakers, unlike children who learn a language (Annual Reviews, 2020). Some people cease learning a language before fully internalizing it, while others stop improving after a long period of time living in a different country (MacWhinney, 2017). Unlike adults, Children are more likely to attain native-like competency in a second language.
The primary distinction between first and second language acquisition is that first language acquisition is a passive process since it involves listening the people around, while the second language acquisition is an active process. It is an active process in the sense that we need to learn grammar and vocabularies, to achieve our goals.
