Are there any unusual or interesting employee rights that are relevant?

            The most unusual employees right in tax and insurance industry are the employment at will. Employment at-will doctrine states the rights that an employer has when demoting, firing, hiring, and promoting. The doctrine provides for some exceptions for some unusual cases. Employees in this industry enjoy rights to ethical treatment, privacy, and free speech (Mayhew, 2019). Employees in the industry also enjoy statutory rights. Statutory rights protect employees from discrimination, provide them with rights to form unions, and safe working conditions.

Do employers have any unusual or interesting responsibilities in this industry?

            Yes. Employees in the insurance and tax industry have some interesting and unusual responsibilities.  They have the responsibilities of being a whistleblower, which means that they should notify the company management of any wrongdoings. Some wrongdoings in this industry may include bribery and tax evasion (Mayhew, 2019). Whistleblowers in tax and insurance have certain legal protection, especially because most employees may decide to blow the whistle on their employer risking their lives and employment status at the organization.

Is employee discipline handled differently in this industry or job?

Yes. Employees’ discipline in the tax and insurance industry is handled differently from traditional systems. In the conventional system, discipline was performed exclusively by supervisors and the company’s management and had zero-tolerance for indiscipline. Traditionally, in disciplined employees would be fired from their jobs with immediate effect, but today in the tax and insurance industry, employees are given second chances.  Unlike other sectors, employees discipline in tax and insurance industry is handled progressively and positively (“Employee Rights and Discipline: Contractual Rights Management Rights Disciplining Employees Human Resource Management Business Human Resource Management,” n.d.). Most employees are required to monitor their own behavior and assume responsibility for their actions. As opposed to punishment, management intervenes for counseling purposes of ensuring that such incidences do not happen again. Discipline in the tax and insurance industry is progressive, which means that the employee is given an opportunity to correct their mistakes and behavior before being charged.
