Part 1: Matrix

Research five engagement strategies that can be implemented in the secondary classroom to help motivate students and create an engaging learning environment.

Complete the “Engagement Strategy Matrix” that includes:

Title of each type of engagement strategy.

Description of each engagement strategy. (At least one must use technology appropriate to the subject matter.)

How the engagement strategy will be implemented within the classroom.

An example of a developmentally appropriate learning activity that utilizes each engagement strategy.

Part 2: Rationale

In 250-500 words, summarize and provide a rationale as to why you chose those engagement strategies. How do these engagement strategies provide an opportunity for motivation and create an environment of learning?

Support your findings with a minimum of three scholarly resources.

Part 1: Matrix

Title of Each Type of Engagement StrategyDescription of  Each of Engagement Strategy (at least one using technology)  How Engagement Strategy will be Implemented Within the ClassroomAn Example of a Developmentally Appropriate Learning Activity that Utilizes Each Engagement Strategy
InteractionEngagement that is achieved through questioning or challenging learners to think or perform something that needs reasoningLearners interact with one another with the teacher as a guide or coach or with guiding materials provided by the educatorsCollaborative problem solving through group discussion or shifts in answering questions
ExplorationTeaching that is problem-based, inquiry-based, and exploratory rather than theories only.Providing learners with problems to challenge each to influence their interest and desire to solve complex issues using data and evidence to establish arguments and conclusions.Laboratory experiments and fieldwork after learning theories in class
RelevancyHelping students find relevance  or teaching the relevance of content to attain the matter at handBuilding relatedness. Connecting learner’s lives to what they already know.Working with community issues through attachments and internships
Multimedia and technology. The use of technology such as media (video, blogs, YouTube, and others) to facilitate the learning processInstructors could prepare a relevant video, pictures, and lecture slides to use in teachings other than only speaking. Students also present their assignments in the form of demonstration rather than hard copies documentsIncorporating the most advanced technologies such as videos, lecture slides, pictures, and others for demonstrations, and using blogs to submit assignments
Authentic assessmentExamination task that looks like writing and reading in school and real worldIdentifying standards in which the instructor selects an authentic task and its criteria for examination. Thereafter, the instructor create the rubric and provide assignments for students to meet the set standardsExamination, continuous assessment cats, writing and drawing about a chapter, student self-assessment

Part 2: Rationale

Interaction is an engagement strategy that promotes respectful relationships and collaboration. According to Taylor & Parsons (2011), interactions make students be intensively social and collaborating learners. Through interaction, teachers identify how students learn and take into account what learners understand or misunderstand. Thereafter, the teachers use the identified information as a starting place to monitor students’ education.

Exploration allows engagement of learners that is based on inquiries, problems, and fact-finding. Consequently, Taylor & Parsons noted that exploration-based engagement makes learners seek the opportunities to research and find solutions for themselves. The engagement strategies help students identify how to employ a digital world in their learning.

Relevancy is another common requirement for engaging students. The strategies have made students ask for learning that applies to actual life settings as opposed to being text-based and theoretical. Wyre (2013) noted that relevancy contributes to more creativity making students find a renewed sense of engagement in learning.

Multimedia and Technology make it possible to move beyond the classroom to talk with and learn from professionals in the field. According to Taylor & Parsons (2011), technology brings students relevant and accessible specialists and subject materials and their tools for engaged education. Further research shows that the more broadly multimedia and technology are applied by instructors the higher the chances of a student to commit to learning and performance (Maloshonok, 2016).

The authentic assessment allows examination tasks similar to writing and reading in school and the real world. The engagement strategy aims at assessing several kinds of literacy abilities in settings that nearly resemble real contexts in which those capabilities could be applied. Taylor & Parsons (2011) noted that incorporating authentic assessment as an engagement strategy enables students to set goals and assess their learning.
