Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition.

Dreyfuls describes five steps in the acquisition skills. These steps follow in a sequencial process that prove the leve of skill. The first level is that of a novice who maily learns through observation and instructions. A novice follows rules given to them by an instructor to perform tasks. After this, a novice graduates into an advanced beginnerwho usually possesses more knowledge on the field and has more practical understanding. From this level, a practioner rises to the level of a competent performer. At this level one is able to synthesise information and analyze situations based on experience background.

The proficient practioner draws conclusions based on their experience which is wider than that of a competent worker. From this grade, a worker elevates to the expert level at which an individual’s actions are guided by intuition and seeing a situation as a whole rather than tackling different components separately (Dreyfuls, 1986).

Differences Between Practical and Theoretical Knowledge

Practical knowledge is learned in the field of work while an individual learns how to perform a task. Theoretical knowledge on the other hand is obtained from books and answers the question ‘why?’ When one attains practical knowledge, they gain the ability to do a given activity. Theoretical knowledge only helps one to perceive how activities are done but such a person lacks the experience of doing such a task. In order for someone with theoretical knowledge to perform a duty, they must depend on reflections of the concepts but an individual with practical knowledge intuitively does tasks.
