Each year, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes (American Diabetes Association, 2019). If left untreated, diabetic patients are at risk for several alterations, including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, neuropathy, and blindness. There are various methods for treating diabetes, many of which include some form of drug therapy. The type of diabetes as well as the patient’s behavior factors will impact treatment recommendations.

For this Discussion, you compare types of diabetes, including drug treatments for type 1, type 2, gestational, and juvenile diabetes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines diabetes as a chronic disease caused by the failure of the pancreas to secrete enough insulin or when the human body is incapable of using the insulin produced within it, which affects over 422 million people worldwide (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Insulin works to regulate blood sugar levels, failure to which body systems may reduce in functionality. Diabetes is associated with heart diseases, kidney failure, blindness, and even death, with its prevalence rate rising at an alarming trajectory. There are four primary classifications or types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body fails to produce insulin, and type 2 diabetes is caused when the body has problems processing glucose. The third class, prediabetes, is caused by high blood sugar, which is of a lesser scale than that of type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar exhibited in pregnant women only. This paper will focus on prediabetes, its treatment options, dietary considerations, and the impact of treatment on patients.

The drug widely used in the treatment of prediabetes is called Glumetza (Zand, Ibrahim & Patham, 2018). The recommended dosage is 500mg administered orally once a day. It is taken after the last meal, and dosage increases by 500mg every one or two weeks following a measure of sugar levels. The maximum dosage is 2000mg once a day. Diet should get tailored to increase foods low in calories and fat and high in fiber (Mayo Clinic, 2021). One should mainly invest in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The short-term effect of this condition is hypoglycemia, while the long-term effects are that it may escalate to type 2 diabetes if not treated. The side effects of this drug include nausea, having a metallic taste, vomiting, diarrhea, and general body weakness. Fortunately, it has not been associated with weight gain, which is the typical form of many diabetes drugs.

One needs to visit a doctor in case of any symptoms linked to prediabetes such as general fatigue, increased urination, and thirst and also avoid any risk factors.
