OVERVIEW

Creating a plan for your career is like planning a journey. The more clearly you can envision the destination, the easier it is to lay out the path in front of you. Throughout Weeks 1–4, you explored your passions and interests in psychology in relation to the practitioner-scholar model. You also provided and received feedback to improve your ability to communicate your vision and relevant goals. This assignment asks you to now put your ideas together in your vision as a multicultural practitioner-scholar. The assignment also provides the opportunity to receive feedback from your instructor to help you further clarify your vision of your future in the field of psychology.

PREPARATION

As you begin to write this assignment, consider the following:

  • Purpose: The purpose of your vision is to create an inspirational and realistic description for how you want to contribute to your specialized field of psychology based on your passions and interests.
  • Primary Audience: Because this is a personal vision statement for your future career, you are your primary audience. Envision yourself in a time where you are frustrated and want to throw in the towel. What would help you remember your purpose and inspire you to continue moving forward towards your vision?
  • Secondary Audience: Your vision should also be clear to other people (such as family, friends, and your instructor) so you can share it with them and receive support in achieving it.
  • Sources: Locate at least three relevant scholarly sources. You will reference these to support your ideas.
  • Writing Your Paper: Be sure to comply with the requirements stated below. Your writing in this assignment should not just be a collection of notes, lists, or questions and answers. Instead, it should be a well-organized discussion that flows logically from one idea to the next.

Abstract

The need for competent multicultural psychologist scholars/practitioners in the world today is an area that has caught my attention for so long now. If I can be the change the world needs, then the world would undoubtedly change. I have always imagined how it would be to be treated psychologically by a psychologist who does not uphold the same cultural values and practices and may not quite understand where I am coming from. In my experience, having come across diverse clients and cultures, I have seen the need to get more enlightened and knowledgeable in multicultural psychology. It has fuelled my journey to study and research more in the area and specialize in counseling psychology in the future. My motivation is the deep desire I have to assist people psychologically and see them lead normal lives. It has also been very encouraging, impacting my clients’ lives through offering them psychological help and seeing them become better people, leading normal psychological lives. McClintock’s scholar-practitioner model has opened my eyes to the areas I have to improve and perfect on to achieve my dream as a competent multicultural psychologist scholar-practitioner. I am fully committed to taking this journey, and I am confident I will achieve my professional aspirations through my passions and goals. The benefits of achieving that dream will be worth the journey and hard work, placing me strategically as an effective, resourceful, and competent multicultural psychologist scholar/practitioner and positively influencing the world.

My Vision As A Multicultural Practitioner Scholar

Multicultural Psychology is an area close to my heart. Having experienced psychological issues first hand and gained help through psychology is an experience I envision myself transferring to many people. In my professional experience, learning that most psychological conditions only require psychological intervention and not just medication and other interventions have been a great learning resource and achievement. Over time, I have seen my clients recover entirely from the psychological issues they had. Additionally, my experience in dealing with clients from diverse cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds has also made me appreciate people’s diversities and uniqueness.

Consequently, I have developed a deep passion for dealing with them and most especially professionally, so that I can effectively help them with their psychological issues while at the same time considering their diversity and unique beliefs and cultures. I believe everyone needs to be clearly understood without bias regardless of their culture and diversity (Frisby, 2018). The quest to be an influential and professional psychologist has influenced my endeavor to be a multicultural practitioner-scholar.

Role as a Multicultural Practitioner-Scholar

McClintock’s scholar-practitioner model views a psychologist as many things in one. For instance, it stipulates that a psychologist should be an educator, a change agent, and a scholar-practitioner (McClintock, 2003). Hence, as an educator, she should enlighten the factors contributing to the client’s problem and foster parental inclusion concerning the needs assessment. As a change agent, the psychologist should be familiar with programs and policies in human services collaboration, adolescent sexuality, and youth development. As a scholar/practitioner, the psychologist should understand the policy, cultural, and organizational contexts besides theory, research, and methodological skills. In addition, she should be skilled at developing respectful and trusting relationships, utilizing change and motivation dynamics, effective communication, and diagnostics aimed at communities, individuals, groups, and organizations.

I have evaluated my competence to deal with psychology clients whose culture is different from mine (Hansen, Pepitone-Arreola-Rockwell & Greene, 2000). Honestly, I need to grow more in that area. Therefore, being a multicultural scholar-practitioner would mean that I should be an educator, a change agent, and a scholar. That means that McClintock’s scholar-practitioner model will help me develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and multicultural competencies to help me achieve my vision. Such include awareness of how personal values are shaped by culture, age, and ethnicity, among the other eleven minimal multicultural practices.

My Vision

My future career vision as a multicultural psychology practitioner-scholar is clearly defined. I envision myself as a competent multicultural psychologist who understands the much influence cultural backgrounds and beliefs have on human behavior and consequent psychological issues. Hence, I will be treating every client and case as unique based on their culture and diversity to assist them psychologically effectively. I especially wish to help youths and married couples from diverse cultures. Furthermore, I will protect our therapeutic relationship through respect for autonomy, confidentiality, and beneficence. I want to practice psychology in a community setting to bring services and help closer to them. The specialized areas for research and scholarship in psychology that I wish to pursue are counseling psychology and clinical psychology (Frisby, 2018). It will help me be a globally influential psychologist equipped to help clients from diverse cultures holistically.

Conclusion

The benefits of achieving my vision of becoming a multicultural psychologist practitioner-scholar will be undoubtedly enormous. It will benefit me as a competent and resourceful practitioner in achieving my professional aspirations and help my clients get the help they need from multicultural skills, knowledge, and competence. Hence, my goal and vision will help me reach my professional aspirations of being a competent multicultural psychologist (Hansen, Pepitone-Arreola-Rockwell, & Greene, 2000). I am very confident in this journey I have endeavored to pursue and the success of hard labor, study, and research that shall follow. Finally, I am committed to achieving this vision and making the world a better and healthier place.
