Critical incident stress is associated with stress mostly emotional which is attached to sudden activities like accidents, shooting or death while carrying out daily activities. Therefore critical incident stress debriefing comes in handy to assist people in dealing with the sudden or long term exposure to this stress by allowing them to reflect on the trauma impacts. CISD is seen to be effective on people who experienced trauma and where provided with it within a period of 24 to 72 hours therefore showing less crisis reactions both long term and short term. This lowers the risks of ASD, PTSD and depression. For a debriefing process to occur there are guidelines and protocols that are followed;  assessing the impacts of the incident on the affected people, identifying the issues leading to the impact including safety and security, use defusing hence people can layout their emotions in a group and provide possible reactions, predicting reactions that may occur from the aftermath, conducting a systematic review of the critical incident and its emotional or physical impact, help bring closure to the people who were affected whilst highlighting the positive experiences from the events and lastly debriefing to assist the affected people to bring their thoughts and to come back to the community, where there is an evaluation of the crisis events which is done in groups.

Critical Incident Stress Management is more comprehensive in stress management whose hypothesis is to reduce the incidence, duration and severity of the effects of the traumatic events. This management has incorporated pre-incident training especially to people whose occupation is highly risked to trauma on how to react to such events. Also a person who experiences these traumas gets individual support from a counselor being provided with psychological distance between the scenes by either having a walk away from the trauma scene. Other techniques like demobilizing and defusing are also taught. In demobilization, the people who work in the traumatic environments are given a practitioner who talks to them as they come off their duties and in defusing, the people get to sit in a group after 12hours of traumatic activities and get to share what they feel and their experience s this helps the people manage their stress.

Advantages of CISD include;

  • Decreased anxiety feelings with decreased arousal and intrusive symptoms, hence in a short-term it reduces post-traumatic stress symptomatology.
  • Help emergency personnel deal with stressful situations they had encountered as a part of their daily activities.
  • Its an effective technique which provides resilience and recovery from trauma.

Disadvantages of CISD

  • It is said to interfere with the natural recovery process in individuals
  • This system is said to bypass other support systems of the affected person like the family or the people close to the person affected by the trauma believing that this system will help the person fell distressed.
  • One usually has a period of processing the trauma and stress and hence no intervention or talking out their emotions will be able to shorten the process.
  • Some scientific findings showed that some deviated even further away from recovery from trauma than those who did not receive intervention.
  • This technique might also lead to the person recovering from the trauma to rely more on the health practitioners.
