The required and recommended resources identified for this week describe and explain the purpose of a literature review and the content elements that should be included in a literature review.  The resources also offer advice on the characteristics of a well-written literature review.  After reviewing a variety of these resources, identify at least five characteristics of a well-written literature review, and explain the significance of each characteristic and its contribution to the overall quality of a literature review.

Download this literature review extracted from a dissertation written by a University of the Rockies student.  Read the literature review and critique it using this week’s readings and the following list to guide your thinking about the quality of the literature review: 

    •    Is the literature review thorough and comprehensive?  Explain.

    •    Describe the different kinds of sources that the research used to make key points about the topic. 

    •    Provide examples of both seminal or foundational and contemporary studies that are used in the literature review.  How well did the researcher integrate these sources to inform the reader about the topic?

    •    How well are important concepts defined and explained by the researcher? 

    •    To what extent did the researcher clearly describe previous studies that are relevant to understanding the topic, including the study methodology, population, and research findings?

    •    What potential biases, if any, can you find in the literature review?

    •    To what extent did the researcher identify potential conflicts or disagreements about the topic?

Critical Components of a Literature Review

            A literature review is used in discussing information that is published regarding a particular subject. It may be an entire paper by itself or be placed at the beginning of a research paper. A literature review serves the purpose of identifying and revealing gaps that exist in previous researches conducted on a similar topic (Arlene, 2014). A research review also recognizes the contribution of each earlier research of trying to understand a particular research issue. Literature Review serves the purpose of conflict resolution among some previous contradictory studies.

Good literature reviews contain some similar essential elements such as the objective, an introduction or background, methods, body or discussion, a conclusion, and Bibliography or references (Arlene, 2014). A goal gives the purpose of the paper, and the introduction provides research topic overview, methods discusses steps followed during the material evaluation, the body evaluates the material thoroughly, the conclusion gives a summary of the analysis and References provide a list of papers used in the discussion.

There are various characteristics of a good literature review among them being, effective content, easy to follow, have precise citations, proper grammar spelling, and punctuations. A good literature review should be easy to follow, and the words that have been chosen should fit a particular audience, for instance, a business review suits business students and not literature students. It should also have effective, and efficient content, and so the writer should be familiar with a lot of research topics, and clearly state the thesis (“GSU Library Research Guides: Literature Reviews: 5. Write the Review,” 2019). A good literature review should be free or common grammar, spelling, and punctuation error-free, and so the writer should involve himself in peer reading. Citations of the works used should be appropriately done using the two main referencing styles.
