CIPD Report: HSE Awareness Session For 5000 Employees In Oil And Gas Company

Recently, I led a project on HSE awareness session for 5000 employees in the oil and gas company. Incontestably, gas and oil activities involve many types of materials and equipment that form workplace hazards. Therefore, training employees on how to recognize and control these hazards is not only critical in the prevention of deaths and injuries, but also in the creation of safe working places and ultimately increasing the employee’s productivity. As an L&D professional, my task included creating and designing HSE awareness program session manuals. The self-guided manuals entailed the health and safety procedures, policies and goals, role of safety program, entities to contact concerning the program, employee’s position under the plan, reporting hazards, emergency procedures, and employee’s rights under OSHA. In collaboration with the manuals created was an on-the-job and worksite demonstrations and training aimed at effectively conveying safety skills and knowledge.

Project Management Skills Used

Project management skills are a necessity to all project managers as they aid in the application of methods, experience, methods, knowledge, and processes tailored at achieving a project’s objectives (Kerzner, 2017). As an L&D professional, I had to ensure effectiveness of the project not only to provide value of resources but also and for continual employee quality improvement. To achieve the two objectives, I tactically created project-specific manuals for the employees tailored per their particular departments. the customizing of manuals according to the employee’s specialization to avoid bombarding them will unnecessary information that might not deem applicable in the line of their duties. Second, I took into consideration the various phases of the project, and that included when to go through the manuals, proceed to worksite demonstrations, and when to complete the project. Third, skills on how to monitor the project’s progress came in handy, and they included the formulation of after-session questions about what safety awareness items learned throughout the sessions and also planning for peer-to-peer training to ascertain the effectiveness of safety measures learned. Unquestionably, no project is devoid of risks, and to counter the problem, I carried out risk assessment and management measures by accurately allocating and estimating session periods to avoid interfering with the functions of the company.

 Self-management Skills Used

Self-management skills guide a project manager in performing their duties to their level best while taking responsibility for their choices and actions, all with the ultimate goal of building on work and life (Prince, Burns, Lu & Winsor, 2015). Leadership is undoubtedly an essential skill I applied in the project, and it enabled in coordinating and ensuring smooth running of the project, something complicated to implement especially considering the size of people involved. Second, communication and relationship building skills, applied in creating the manuals, approaching and relaying project information to both the employees and management team played a significant role in emphasizing its necessity. Additionally, critical thinking was crucial in strategizing on learning experience and tools, something that kept everyone entertained and interested throughout the learning session.

Analyzing and Resolving Problems with Justified Implementation of Recommended Solution

Problems hindering a smooth flow of projects are not something new, and neither mine was different as I experienced corporation resistance from the employees who preferred to work rather than attend the awareness session. To analyze and resolve the problem, I applied the DMAIC process that helps in defining, quantifying, identifying the causes of the problem, and then implementing, verifying, and maintaining the solution agreed upon (Sutphin et al., 2015). The problem was detected to emanate from a single company department, and this was a result of piling of enormous workload. To solve the resistance problem from the employees, the departmental workers were allowed to resume duties immediately after the end of sessions in connection with the line of their specialization until the awareness project came to an end.

Influencing, Persuasion and Negotiation Methods

It is arguably complicated to convince someone with whom you have no authority over to cooperate with you. To exercise influence over the 5000 workers attending the project session, the Cohen-Bradford influence model that works on reciprocity, relationship, and compromise concepts (Serrat, 2017), proved vital as a majority of them attended the meeting without complication. Persuasively, I discovered that they valued their safety, and by that, they ought to exchange the knowledge and skills I would impact them through the awareness session by cooperating and attending all meetings and practices diligently.

Reflection on The Gained Knowledge and Skills

The project was crucial in improving my competence as an L&D professional where I turned and applied theoretical knowledge into practically productive setting. I plan on embarking on more projects in the future, using for vocational education, and volunteering more to perfect the shortcomings encountered during the implementation of this project. Additionally, the skills and knowledge gained profoundly enrich my CPD, thus allowing my strengths and capabilities keep pace with trendy standards of other professionals in my specialization filed. Moreover, the self-management skills perfected will in future help in effecting relationships with colleagues, and make right career-related decisions.
